Following the example of composers such as Charles Ives, who pursued composition while working outside the music world, Corey Field is a professionally trained composer who is better known as a prominent entertainment, media, and copyright attorney at his Los Angeles based law firm Corey Field Law Group, P.C.
Corey holds a B.A. in Music from the University of California at Santa Barbara, and a D.Phil. (PhD) in music composition from the University of York, England. His music studies included one year at Edinburgh University, Scotland as part of the University of California Education Abroad program, and a summer at the Aspen Music Festival studying composition. In this early career as a professional composer, Corey had commissions, performances, broadcasts, recordings, and awards, including BBC Radio broadcasts, commissions funded by leading organizations including the Arts Council of Great Britain, premieres in venues including The Wigmore Hall, awards including two BMI Student Composer Awards, and recordings on independent record labels. Several early works including chamber, vocal, and choral works were published by Helicon Music Corporation, the United States affiliate of Schott Music International.
Corey was also active as a music journalist, contributing articles and music reviews to publications including The Musical Times (London), Composer Magazine (London), NOTES (The Journal of the Music Library Association), Keynote Magazine, and newspapers including The Yorkshire Evening Press.
Corey subsequently entered the world of music business as the Vice President of European American Music Distributors Corporation, the United States joint venture of leading European music publishers Schott Music International and Universal Edition. During this period Corey worked with the entire international music community as a music publisher, and served as a board member of The Music Publishers Association of the United States in New York.
In order to further his publishing and copyright expertise, Corey attended law school simultaneously with his business career and holds a J.D. cum laude from Widener University School of Law. In 2001 he embarked upon a new career as a leading entertainment, media, and copyright attorney, author, and educator, first at a national law firm then at his own boutique firm, combining his unique practical entertainment industry experience with legal expertise. Corey founded First Leaf Music to self-publish his recent works. The name "First Leaf" is in homage to the "First Folio" 1623 printed edition of Shakespeare's works.
The distributor for First Leaf Music is Subito Music Corp. where all published works are available for sale (scores and smaller works) and rental (orchestral works):
